Introduction

As a High School Varsity Official, one of the responsibilities that often falls on our shoulders is evaluating and mentoring Junior Varsity (JV) Officials. However, it's crucial to recognize that not every JV Official aspires to officiate under the bright lights of Varsity basketball. How do we navigate this complexity? Here's how I approach the issue.

Understanding Individual Goals

The first step in addressing this situation is to have an open conversation with the JV Official. The aim is to understand their goals and aspirations within the realm of basketball officiating. Some may be content with officiating at the JV level due to various reasons such as time commitments, stress levels, or simple personal preference.

Tailoring Feedback and Guidance

Once the JV Official’s intentions are clear, the type of feedback and guidance can be tailored accordingly. For those who don’t wish to move up to Varsity, the focus can be on helping them excel in their current role rather than preparing them for the next level.

Respecting Choices

As Varsity Officials, it’s important to respect the individual choices of each JV Official. Not everyone has the same career trajectory in mind, and that's perfectly okay. By honoring their wishes, we can foster a more respectful and inclusive officiating community.

Focused Skill Development

Even if a JV Official doesn't wish to move up the ranks, there are still areas where they can improve. This might include better game management, clearer signaling, or more effective communication with coaches and players. The goal here is to help them become the best JV Official they can be, which ultimately benefits the game at that level.

The Value of Contentment

There’s value in having experienced, competent officials at the JV level. Their expertise can make games more enjoyable and fair, impacting the athletes' development positively. Just because they don’t wish to move up doesn’t mean their role is any less important. In many cases, they can serve as role models for new officials who are just starting out, even if they don't aspire for higher-level games.

Creating a Supportive Environment

Regardless of an official’s aspirations, creating a supportive environment is essential. This includes offering regular evaluations, constructive feedback, and opportunities for continuous learning. By doing this, we can ensure that each official performs to the best of their ability, irrespective of the level they choose to officiate.

Conclusion

The role of a Varsity Official in mentoring and evaluating JV Officials is not a one-size-fits-all job. Individual goals and aspirations must be considered to provide the most effective guidance and support. By understanding, respecting, and tailoring our approach to each JV Official’s unique situation, we can contribute positively to the development of basketball officiating as a whole.
