Coming off a strong season with a 94.47 average and ranking 21st out of 67 officials, I’m ready to take my performance to the next level. With a focus on game management, personal growth, and incorporating the 2024-25 NFHS Points of Emphasis (POE), I’m setting my sights on consistency, professionalism, and an impactful officiating presence. Here’s how I plan to make this season my best yet:
1. Sharp, Clean Mechanics and Rotations
Clear, precise mechanics are essential for every call. This season, I’m working on refining my signals to ensure they are sharp and easily understood. Additionally, smooth rotations are critical to effective positioning. I’ll focus on consistently clean rotations, moving fluidly to position myself optimally, regardless of whether I’m in a two- or three-person crew.
2. Leadership in Game Management and Crew Chief Role
As crew chief, my responsibility is to set the standard for professionalism, control, and smooth communication. Game management is about anticipating and handling potential conflicts, as well as guiding my partners with clear, proactive communication. I want to establish open dialogue throughout each game and set clear expectations from the pre-game conference to post-game review, leading by example to create a unified and effective officiating team.
3. Addressing Flopping and Faking Fouls
With player flopping and faking fouls emphasized in the 2024-25 NFHS POE, I’ll focus on discerning between genuine contact and exaggerated reactions. I aim to call out unsporting behavior and discourage players from faking fouls to gain an advantage, reinforcing the importance of fair play. Recognizing and addressing these tactics early in the game will help maintain the integrity of play and set a clear standard.
4. Strengthen Enforcement of Bench Decorum and Player Conduct
This season’s POE includes bench decorum and player behavior as key areas, and I’m committed to upholding this emphasis. Ensuring a respectful and controlled environment means addressing misconduct immediately, whether it’s unsporting behavior, taunting, or inappropriate actions by bench personnel. I’ll issue warnings or technical fouls as needed, focusing on keeping the game focused and fair for everyone involved.
5. Optimize Positioning for Competitive Match-Ups
My positioning is critical to staying connected with competitive match-ups, particularly in fast-paced situations. This season, I’ll emphasize staying close to the action, especially as Center, stepping down to maintain visibility on off-ball play. This focus allows me to capture critical moments while keeping a balanced view of the entire court, ensuring I’m ready to make accurate, timely
6. Establish Consistency with Partners, Honest and Open Communication
Working with various partners brings diverse perspectives, and I’m committed to managing any challenges with honesty and open communication. I’ll make sure that my feedback is constructive and direct, setting a standard for mutual respect. Additionally, I won’t allow any partners to undermine me or others on the crew, ensuring that our team maintains a professional and unified approach on the court. This also includes not tolerating disrespect, both from or towards other officials, creating a positive, supportive environment.
7. Qualify for Regionals and State-Level Assignments
Earning a spot in regional and state-level tournaments is one of my long-term goals. This season, I’ll show my readiness by mastering the POE areas such as bench decorum, flopping, and end-of-game management. Demonstrating leadership, consistency, and reliability on the court will reinforce my suitability for high-level assignments and allow me to make a lasting impact in our association.
8. Enhance Shot Clock Management Skills
With the shot clock now integrated into our games, I’m honing my skills to manage resets, violations, and operator coordination smoothly. I’ll be working closely with the shot clock operator to ensure accurate timing and minimal disruption, especially in high-stakes moments. This focus is part of my commitment to upholding the latest shot clock guidelines and ensuring fluid, fair gameplay
9. Daily Time Management for Film Review and Maintaining a Healthy Mindset
Developing daily habits for film review and reflection is essential for continuous growth. I plan to set aside time each day to watch footage, assess my mechanics, and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, maintaining a positive, resilient mindset is key, especially when challenges arise with partners or in-game decisions. Regular review and self-reflection will keep me focused and prepared to handle every game with clarity and composure
10. Physical and Mental Preparedness
To perform at my best, I need both physical stamina and mental agility. This season, I’ll continue with a consistent training routine to stay in peak condition, ready for the demands of varsity-level games. Mentally, I’m committing to techniques like visualization and mindfulness, allowing me to approach each game with a sharp focus and adaptability. Staying prepared physically and mentally ensures that I can make quick, accurate calls while keeping pace with the game.
With these ten goals, I’m setting a high standard for myself and embracing my role as both a leader and a learner on the court. By incorporating sharp mechanics, honest communication, consistent positioning, and the NFHS Points of Emphasis, I’m committed to delivering an officiating experience that supports fair play, professionalism, and excellence every game.
